Judgment Recovery Business Provides Steady Income and Helps Others Collect
By Home Business Magazine
In her “Life Before Judgment Recovery,” Christina Smiley owned a carpet store. She accumulated monstrous debt, and her credit cards were maxed to the limit. Christina even took on a second job to make ends meet, which made childcare a nightmare. It was too much. She just didn't want to live that way any more. Christina decided the only thing that made sense was to earn money from home.
During a call to get family updates, she learned that her cousin expanded a paralegal business to include collecting judgments. Christina realized that was probably a great way she could earn money and help people at the same time.
“Just because a judge orders someone to pay you doesn't mean that person is going to pay,” explains Christina. “Regardless of what a court of law ordered, it would be your responsibility to take action. Most people don’t pursue it, because they don't know how.” Christina’s company, Sierra Judgment Recovery, contacts judgment holders to offer her services. According to Christina, by using her company, there is no out-of-pocket expense to them.
It was a learning process for six months to a year for Christina to research civil statutes and fine-tune her marketing methods. After researching the remedies available to enforce judgments, the next battle was learning how to find the judgment debtors’ assets — which is one of the main reasons average judgment holders can’t collect.
Christina has now been in business for over 14 years, and it's filling a true niche. “The flexibility of this business is great,” she says. “It allows me a lot of personal freedom. I refuse to let my work take over my life, and now I don't have to.” What's also nice about her business is that it's primarily behind-the-scenes work. Everything is done with paperwork through the court system, from seizing bank accounts and garnishing wages, to placing liens on property and other civil remedies.
Per Christina, her judgment recovery business provides a steady, predictable income of $8,000 per month on average, and she can't imagine giving that up. Her primary goal is to continue to provide training and education. Christina’s also created a step-by-step home study course that goes through the entire process. She’s also a founder of the California Association of Judgment Professionals and served as Director of Continuing Education. Visit www.recoverycourse.com. HBM
