Husband’s and Wife’s Business is a Labor of Love
By Home Business Magazine
Accidents can happen to anyone, anywhere at anytime. This hit home for Tara and Luke Hermann when their young son began choking one day at lunch.
After a moment of shock and panic, Tara’s training as a nurse kicked in, and she successfully gave him the Heimlich Maneuver.
That day changed the Hermann’s lives forever. They realized that in an instant, everything could have been different. What if Tara’s and Luke’s son had been with their sitter or parents when he choked? Would they have known what to do? It became clear to the Hermanns that part of loving their baby was knowing what to do during an emergency and making sure everyone who cares for him does the same.
Tara and Luke (an ER doctor) created MEDBASICS (www.babymedbasics.com) to provide parents and caregivers with products that will help them turn moments of panic into lifesaving action. Their home-based business started as a labor of love and has grown organically since. Because Tara and Luke subcontract the manufacturing and distribution of their products, their physical space needs are relatively small, and much of what they do can be accomplished with a computer and an Internet connection.
Running the business from their home has kept their overhead low while allowing them the ability to work in the business whenever a free moment presents itself. “Obviously there can be downsides—meetings with clients usually have to occur elsewhere, storage issues are problematic, and even the lack of a mental break of leaving home to “go to the office” can get old—but on a balance, the benefits of working from home clearly outweigh the negatives for us,” says Tara.
Tara and Luke try to be creative in promoting their business, while keeping costs to a minimum. Online social media, particularly “mom blogs” have been effective for them. They also have completed a group PR campaign with Orca Communications, which helped increase their visibility dramatically.
Tara’s and Luke are pleased with the successful navigation of their initial concept to final product that is packaged and ready for resale. “In the current age of globalization and web-based business, it is truly amazing what can be accomplished with only a dream and a bit of perseverance,” says Tara.
