Entrepreneur Creates Successful Home Business out of Favorite Hobby

Jen Warren’s favorite childhood memories consist of sitting next to her mom, collaborating on some type of craft, like painting a small dresser or decorating a picture frame. “Growing up, my mom and I would work on lots of different projects,” recalls the 25 year-old owner of a trendy New York City-based home accessory company. “We would spend lots of time in our local craft store looking for new projects and accent pieces that could be embellished with fabrics, ribbons, and trim.” 

After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania in 2003 with a degree in psychology, she went to work at a large Madison Avenue advertising agency. However, she never drifted too far from her arts and crafts roots. “During my time there, I constantly felt the need for a more hands-on creative outlet,” shares Jen. “I began making picture frames, mirrors, and lamps to decorate my apartment, as well as to give as gifts for friends and family.”

Word traveled about Jen’s one-of-a-kind creations, described as both whimsical and stylish. She says, “As interest in my products increased, I decided it was time to dedicate myself to my designs with full force by creating a business.”

Jen left her advertising job and launched her eclectic home accessory line, “With Love, Jen Warren” — comprised of picture frames, lampshades, mirrors, and now comfortable cotton loungewear. In the beginning, she continued to rely heavily on word-of-mouth advertising to generate sales, in addition to attending street fairs and creating an online store, www.jenwarren.com.

Today, Jen’s handmade products are sold in 11 boutiques in the New York and New Jersey areas. She has signed on a sales representative to further expand her business and hopes to reach her goal of six figures in sales in 2007.

It has not been easy work, but Jen feels working from home has contributed to her success. “Working from home provides me with the flexibility to do whatever is needed for my business without sacrificing my own personal life or feeling like ‘I live in an office,’” says Jen. “I've created a great home-work environment in my apartment and really enjoy being able to showcase my business/design studio in my home.” HBM
