When flipping through the pages of most wedding photo albums, you’re bound to come across a series of perfectly-orchestrated, yet completely unnatural-looking wedding poses: bride and groom staring off into the distance, bride and groom uncomfortably wedged in between a flurry of grandparents, great aunts, and third cousins, and then, of course, there’s the ever-popular wedding party in sunglasses line-up.
Nader Coobtee and Donna Kwok, of Red Lantern Photography (www.redlanternphotography.com), know that capturing the true essence of a wedding is more than just snapping a few dozen pre-planned, formal poses. By taking a photojournalistic approach, they focus on the all important details, like the mother of the bride tenderly fixing her daughter’s veil, or the look on the groom’s face as he watches his beautiful bride walk down the aisle.
Prior to starting their wedding photography business in 2005, Nader worked in both the legal and real estate professions, while Donna worked as a web designer. “We started our home-based business out of a desire to follow our dream of working for ourselves, doing something we enjoyed,” says Nader. “We wanted to put our effort and sweat into a career that we cared about and that wasn’t a daily drudgery.”
Based in Indio, California, Nader and Donna work primarily in the Palm Springs area. After photographing a wedding, they put together a glossy, collage-style album that tells the complete story, from what the party favors and centerpieces looked like, to 80-year old Great Uncle Louie dancing on the table. “The work we create will be meaningful to people a generation or more from now,” says Donna. “Children and grandchildren will look at our work and be able to see their parents or grandparents on one of the happiest days of their lives.”
Working from home has enabled Nader and Donna to keep overhead costs low and to have complete control over their work environment. “We are in a creative field and we believe that to be creative, the surroundings you choose can influence your inspiration and productivity,” says Donna. “If inspiration strikes at an odd hour, we can take action immediately since our office is only a few steps away.” HBM
