Thirteen Year Old Starts Business after Attending Business Camp
April Y. Lawrence had a bad experience when she was 11 years old that inspired her to start her home business. She had a relaxer put in her hair, and the chemicals caused her hair to break off severely. From then on, April didn’t want to use any chemical products. She searched her local retail stores for natural products to use in her hair. The products she found claimed to be natural and organic, but still contained harsh synthetic chemicals. April researched those synthetic ingredients, some of which she couldn’t pronounce, and she found natural alternatives. Using those natural alternatives, April developed her first product. At the age of 13, after attending a business camp with the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship, April decided to start her own home business and share her product with the world. April’s company, EDEN BodyWorks, can be briefly described by its mission statement: “To provide all natural solutions that integrate wellness and beauty, inspired by nature, to restore and maintain the body’s original design.” April is offering quality affordable products for all types of people with every type of hair. Her goal is to give people all natural alternatives for the chemical products they have become so accustom to. Word of mouth marketing is April’s greatest tool to promoting her home-based business. Satisfied customers are elated to tell their friends and family about EDEN BodyWorks. As a spokesperson for EDEN BodyWorks, April travels to help promote her company and inspire others to turn their obstacles into opportunity. April also markets through tradeshows, television appearances, newspaper and magazines editorial, and email marketing. April’s primary customers are women, but she has a lot of male customers. Most of them are just looking for natural alternatives. Some of her customers suffer from damaged or over processed hair. As she expands her line, April will be making products for men women and children of all ages and ethnicities. Before April graduates high school, she wants to have distribution internationally. She knows it will a lot of work but she believe she can do it. In three years, April sees herself in college, but she will still continue her role as the CEO of her home business.
