Unemployment rose to a five-year high as employers continued to cut jobs and trim payrolls. Rising to the highest level since 2003, unemployment increased to 6.1%. Through August 2008, the economy has lost 605,000 jobs so far this year. With the exception of a few sectors, such as government hiring and low-end services, most job sectors are being hit with declines. Economic measurements and projections—across the board—continue to deteriorate. The jobless and unemployment rates will likely increase further as the financial crisis grows. An excellent hedge against bad economic times is to start a home-based business. Compared to the broader ranges of small business size, home-based businesses both are easier to start and have lower start-up costs. Even better, most home businesses can be operated part-time—around the “day job,” before that job may end up a statistic.
