Keeping Households and Families Together

Katie Dyer started Heroes At Home when her husband Paul, a Captain in the Army, deployed to Afghanistan. Katie realized how difficult it was to stay in touch with him, and with thousands of American families in the same situation, she wanted to do something to help other families stay close while their loved ones are deployed.

Heroes At Home allows soldiers to sign up to send gifts and flowers to loved ones on certain dates while they are gone. They can choose from a one-month to a twelve-month package. They choose all the gifts before they leave, and enter delivery dates, and Katie’s business takes care of the rest!

“I am proud that my business allows soldiers to concentrate on their mission, knowing that loved ones at home are taken care of on their birthdays or anniversaries,” says Katie. “And it reminds spouses and families that their soldiers are always thinking of them, even when they can't call or write.”

Since Katie’s customers are men and women in the military, she spends a lot of time marketing on bases and in armories. Sometimes she hands business cards to people she sees in uniform at places like the airport. Katie also relies heavily on word of mouth, and networking among soldiers.

Before starting Heroes At Home, Katie spent almost 10 years as a television news anchor. She loved her job, but she really felt like she was being called to help military families and to be there for other military wives facing the same challenges she was.

Working from home allows Katie to spend time writing in her journal and taking care of herself, which is vital for anyone going through a deployment. “I love having a flexible schedule and being able to concentrate on projects that are really important to me,” says Katie. “And I get to spend a lot more time with our 8 dogs.” Katie is also working on a book about her experiences during her husband's deployment.

“I truly believe that military families are made up of two types of heroes

— those that risk their lives to defend our country, and those that keep households and families together while their loved ones are deployed,” says Katie. “My business exists to help military personnel celebrate, honor, and keep in touch with their Heroes at Home!” For more information, visit www.myheroesathome.com.
