The American dream is undergoing a major makeover. While pinstripe suits, a corner office, and 9-to-5 hours were once a coveted career; pajama tops, a home office, and setting your own schedule are taking over as America’s latest career ambitions thanks to online sales sites like eBay.
In fact, just under half of American adults (44 percent) claim they or someone they live with currently sells or have considered selling goods online as a primary or significant secondary source of income, according to a new survey by Mpire™ (www.mpire.com), a provider of web-based services that simplify the way small businesses sell online. Additional survey findings include:
~ 64 percent of U.S. adults indicated they would be likely or very likely to pursue selling online if they knew it could significantly supplement or even replace their current income.
~ About 1 in 4 homemakers (29 percent), as well as 1 in 5 current retirees (20 percent) have considered selling online as a significant income source.
~ Being able to set your own work hours was cited as one of the biggest benefits to working from home and selling online (76 percent); this benefit was particularly important to women ages 35-44 (83 percent). HBM
