Organic T-Shirt Company Has a Global Mission
Who knew that Jennifer Capaci would have gone from working in an accounting division at a law firm to being a stay-at-home mom to now owning her own organic t-shirt company that gives back to charity? Jennifer started her
company, Terra Collection, with an idea to combine the things that she loves – charities, going green, and fashion. She wanted Terra Collection to be an organic t-shirt company with a global mission. With the purchase of each Terra Tee, a donation is made to one of several charities dedicated to improving the quality of life on this planet — from cleaning up the air and water to protecting the animals and the earth. The current collection, the Terra Tee Project, features four t-shirt designs — Earth, Air, Water, and Life.
After Jennifer had her son Dane, she started buying organic and eco-friendly whenever possible. One night, Jennifer and her husband, Levi, were talking about the organic industry and how popular it was becoming. They thought that people, like themselves, would embrace a stylish, organic shirt that also allowed the option of choosing a cause to support. The tee shirts Jennifer and Levi designed are targeted for the upscale boutique shopper.
In order to launch and promote the business, Jennifer hired a PR firm, TO Media Co., to handle the majority of her marketing. She has also recently begun a blog to attract customers and is beginning to use social networking sites to advertise the company as well.
Jennifer is proud of creating a product that is both green and sustainable. “It was really important to me that my shirts were produced locally and that the entire process was eco-friendly,” she says. Since the majority of manufacturers are overseas, it required a lot more research and trial and error until Jennifer found a set of manufacturers that could produce high quality, organic garments.
Working from home offers Jennifer the flexibility to care for her two young children and assist her husband with his business. Her future goals are to have additional apparel items and accessories added to the Terra Collection line and to increase exposure of her line through national department store accounts. Say Jennifer, “If you can walk the path that I have from accounting to a home-based organic clothing company – anything is possible.” HBM
